USPS reused boxes: old marks and Priority Mail packaging limits
For ordinary domestic U.S. mailing of nonregulated contents, identify whether this is an ordinary reused box or USPS-provided Priority Mail packaging. Exterior markings and service restrictions are separate checks.
Identify the packaging. USPS-provided Priority Mail packaging is only for Priority Mail. Its appropriate Priority Mail price applies even if the box is reconfigured or its markings are obliterated. If its origin or selected service is unclear, resolve that before buying postage.
Check the ordinary reused box. USPS warns reused boxes can weaken. Use strong packaging with room for cushioning so contents do not shift. No box was inspected here.
Find every old mark. Cover or black out old logos, barcodes, shipping labels and addresses. Old markings and labels must be removed or completely obliterated until unreadable. Covering one old address leaves other marks unresolved.
Treat residual hazard marks separately. Old hazardous or restricted markings may cause delay, return or removal from the mailstream regardless of actual contents. Publication 52 says USPS employees may not alter or remove these marks for the mailer; the mailer or authorized representative must do so. This concerns outdated marks: removing a currently required label does not establish that the contents are mailable.
Check the current label plan. Keep addresses and postage on the same side; labels must not bend over edges or overlap. A prepared label establishes neither USPS acceptance nor possession.
Keep the box origin, intended service, condition and any unresolved contents question in the private owner handoff. If a fact remains unknown, ask for that fact rather than selecting a cheaper service by appearance. This procedure ends at preparation; it makes no postage quote or acceptance promise.
Official text checked on 2026-10-05T11:19:13Z; no HTML update date was established. Recheck before mailing, on source changes, or by 2026-11-05T11:19:13Z. Fourteen author and six distinct internal checker manual decisions were checked. These are source/document checks under one controller, not a box inspection, mailing test or independent review. Feedback should identify the exact step and source discrepancy without publishing addresses or labels.
