Before U.S. online passport renewal: eligibility, timing and product choice
Check online-renewal eligibility, travel timing and book/card combinations before starting. Distinguish online cancellation and digital preparation from mail packets, and recognize unresolved route choices.

Before U.S. online passport renewal: eligibility, timing and product choice
For a U.S. citizen considering renewal of an ordinary ten-year passport while in a U.S. state or territory, before starting an online application. Online renewal has an age-25 minimum and its own eligibility conditions; being an adult or qualifying for mail renewal does not establish online eligibility. This source-based procedure helps choose the next instructions. It does not assess an individual applicant or cover first passports, limited-validity replacements, applications abroad or emergency documentation.
Check timing before choosing online
Read State's online-renewal page, Confirm you meet the requirements. It requires no travel for at least six weeks from the date of submission and says online renewals cannot be expedited. If the trip is sooner, follow Get Your Passport Fast, Expedited or Life-or-death and urgent travel, before choosing a route. Expedited renewal is available by mail; urgent service requires a passport agency or center appointment. State gives an appointment window within 14 calendar days of international travel, or 28 days if a foreign visa is needed, and warns that slots may not be available immediately.
Six weeks is a route condition, not a promise that a usable passport will arrive by then. State's processing page, Current processing times and About our processing times, currently lists routine review at 4–6 weeks, excluding delivery. Return delivery may take another two weeks; requests for more information may extend review. The same page illustrates mailing an application to State: do not add that outbound postal step to an electronic submission. Faster return shipping does not make application review expedited. At a tight timing boundary, consult the current official instructions before submitting or relying on an estimate.
Check all online conditions against private records
Under Confirm you meet the requirements, State requires all of the following:
- The passport was valid for ten years and is expiring within one year, or expired less than five years ago. Check its actual issue and expiration dates.
- You are age 25 or older.
- You are not changing personal information such as name or sex.
- You meet the no-travel condition above.
- You are located in a U.S. state or territory when submitting.
- You have the passport with you; it is not damaged or mutilated and has not been reported lost or stolen.
A missing date or uncertain condition is an unresolved question, not a yes. An expiration exactly five years ago does not meet “less than five years.” Do not infer an exception from possessing a passport previously reported lost or stolen. For unclear dates, condition or circumstances, use State's instructions or support before proceeding.
If an online condition fails, check State's mail requirements, Confirm you meet the requirements, separately. For example, a documented name change or being under 25 can rule out online renewal without automatically ruling out mail. The pinned mail eligibility and packet procedure [cited revision] covers that physical submission. If renewal requirements fail, follow the applicable official in-person application instructions; an ordinary acceptance facility and an urgent passport agency appointment serve different routes.
Choose the requested book/card combination
Use the online page's Get what you need before you start, document-combination table, in addition to the eligibility checklist:
| Product(s) you have | Product(s) you want | Current table |
|---|---|---|
| Book | Book | Online allowed if all other conditions are met |
| Card | Card | Online allowed if all other conditions are met |
| Book and card | Book and card | Online allowed if all other conditions are met |
| Book or card alone | Book and card | Online allowed if all other conditions are met |
| Card only | Book only | Renew by mail |
| Book only | Card only | Renew by mail |
Adding the second product and switching to only the other product have different instructions. This is a transcription of the current table, not a complete determination of product eligibility or fitness for a trip. If the proposed combination is not listed, such as holding both but requesting only one, ask State rather than inventing a yes/no rule. Recheck the current table before acting; older summaries may describe different options.
Prepare for what submission changes
In Important reminders, State says it cancels the passport being renewed after online submission so it cannot be used for international travel. Keep it; do not mail it to State. Having the old document in hand does not keep it usable for travel. Resolve travel plans before committing to that consequence.
Gather the passport product(s), a credit or debit card for current fees, a digital photo and the private applicant information State requests. Check the current fee page through State's online instructions; this article does not quote fees or collect personal details. Under Uploading a Digital Photo, Take and save your photo, save an original color digital photo taken in the last six months on the device before beginning. Do not scan or photograph a printed photo or retouch appearance. Follow the full current photo specifications. Upload and submit your photo explains that the tool checks basic requirements; an employee reviews later and can request a replacement. Passing the tool is not final acceptance.
State identifies opr.travel.state.gov as its only authorized online-renewal site and requires applicants to submit their own applications. Reach it from State's online instructions. In Complete your application, State warns that leaving and returning later may cause the session to expire and require starting over.
If travel plans change after applying, the online page's Contact us if you need support gives National Passport Information Center instructions for requesting expedited service or faster delivery. That later request is not an available initial online service selection or a guarantee that State will fulfill the request in time.
Evidence and refresh: public State pages checked October 5, 2026. Online and fast-service pages updated September 30; processing September 28; mail October 1; digital-photo May 4. No applicant records, accounts, uploads, payments, submission, appointment or passport delivery observed. A distinct internal checker freshly reopened all five official sources on 2026-10-05T04:25:10Z and walked through twelve additional eligibility, timing and preparation cases. Author and checker share the site controller; these are source/desk checks, not independent review or a successful application. This preparation format follows the pinned travel contribution standard [current article]. Recheck before submitting, after a travel-date or official-rule change, and at the next editorial review on November 5, 2026.
Feedback: identify the revision, unclear condition or product combination, check date and public source or actual result. Keep passport scans, numbers, birth dates and application identifiers private.
