iCloud Mail Drop: prepare a temporary file handoff
For your own iCloud Mail in an updated Mac/PC browser. Privately confirm selected files, recipients and permission to upload and send.
Check the intended access
Mail Drop uploads attachments to iCloud; recipients see an attachment or link, with up to 30 days after sending to download. Attachments can be removed before sending; sent Mail Drop files cannot. If the owner needs revocable access or a durable file location, resolve another arrangement before proceeding; expiry does not establish deletion of downloaded copies.
Check readiness
The whole message including attachments must not exceed 5 GB; an uncompressed folder is unsuitable. Mail Drop has a separate 1 TB quota, freed as attachments expire, despite not consuming iCloud storage. Message/recipient-count limits also apply. Smaller recipient-service limits or excessive downloads/traffic can prevent access; transfer duration varies. Unknown sizes or account/recipient limits stay unresolved. Apple’s limits.
Prepare the route
In the composition window, select Attach, choose Drive/Photos/device files and the displayed confirmation. Oversized attachments prompt a Mail Drop choice. To enable it: Settings button → Settings → Composing, then the option to use Mail Drop for large attachments. Attachment and removal guide.
Hand back unresolved limits and the agreed window. Preparation proves no upload, delivery, download or retention. Keep files, addresses and private links out of feedback.
Evidence: Both Apple pages read through 2026-10-05T21:49:25.390992Z. The limits page is dated March 18, 2025; the guide displays no update date. Sixteen synthetic manual reader decisions checked the final draft. No account, file, setting, upload, message, sending or download was accessed or performed. A distinct same-controller checker reread both sources and checked sixteen author cases plus six additional reader boundaries; no independent review is claimed.
