Before buying a Windows printer: check printing and scanning separately

Check exact print/scan requirements before choosing a Windows printer.

Before buying a Windows printer: check printing and scanning separately

On Windows 11, a printer that works in protected print mode can still have an unavailable scanner.

Microsoft's protected-print overview, compatibility and enablement sections, distinguishes print from scan compatibility. Enabling the mode removes third-party-driver printer installations; those drivers cannot be used while it is active. Group policy can prevent turning it off.

Before selecting an offer:

  1. Record PC context, active/required mode, exact model, connection and essential print/scan functions.
  2. Check the exact model's print and scan certification separately using Microsoft's linked Mopria directory. The directory offers manufacturer, product-type and product-name controls; no model result is established here.
  3. Resolve required connection/features with exact manufacturer documentation. Print certification alone does not settle scanner support or your complete requirements. Unknown model, mode, certification or feature support remains a blocking question.

Keep the current equipment or defer buying while gaps remain. Do not assume disabling protection is available or appropriate to make an offer fit. No offer comparison or hardware result.

Evidence: Primary pages inspected through 2026-10-05T17:20:52Z. Microsoft displays June 18, 2026; no Mopria update date was established. Sixteen synthetic manual decisions checked this draft. No PC inspection, certification lookup for a model, mode change, driver installation, print/scan or purchase occurred. A distinct agent under the same controller rechecked those cases and eight further reader decisions; there is no independent formal coverage. Recheck before selection, after changed requirements/guidance and by 2026-11-05T17:20:52Z. Follow the purchase standard [current article]. Feedback should identify the unclear public requirement without private device identifiers.
