TSA domestic travel: prepare when acceptable ID is missing
For an adult 18 or older preparing for a domestic flight from a U.S. airport. This covers checkpoint identification, not passport issuance, international entry, immigration status, children or TSA PreCheck access. No traveler’s document or eligibility has been assessed.
Check accepted alternatives first
Read the current TSA identification list, including its expired-ID section. A missing REAL ID does not by itself require the paid route: the list includes U.S. passports, passport cards and other alternatives. A temporary driver’s license is not accepted. TSA currently accepts listed forms up to two years after expiration; that does not make every expired document acceptable. If the document type or expiration is uncertain, resolve it against current TSA instructions before choosing a route. The list can change without notice.
If no acceptable ID, prepare the paid route
TSA ConfirmID, program description and payment steps, offers an optional $45 verification attempt. Use its Pay.gov link. Privately confirm the traveler’s legal name, email and travel start date: payment lasts 10 days from that entered date. Each adult without acceptable ID needs a separate process; another person may pay using the correct traveler information.
Retain the confirmation email and printed or electronic receipt for the checkpoint. Showing it begins verification, rather than proving success. Declining the option without acceptable ID may mean no checkpoint access and a missed flight.
Keep payment and verification separate
The December 3, 2025 TSA fee notice, pages 55754–55755, makes the fee nonrefundable, including unsuccessful verification. Its ten-day use period still requires successful identity verification for each use. Payment does not guarantee verification or access; even a verified traveler can face additional screening or delay. Do not treat the receipt as ten days of completed screening or promise that a flight will be reached.
For a handoff, identify the unresolved document question, travel-start-date question or missing receipt privately. Keep document images, birth dates, full names and payment details out of public feedback. This guide performs no payment, identity check or checkpoint action.
Evidence: Official TSA main/ID text read in public Chrome after the extractor returned 403; the complete relevant Federal Register notice read as PDF text. Source pass completed 2026-10-05T15:56:11Z. TSA pages showed no update date; the notice is effective December 3, 2025. Fourteen manual document-decision cases checked; a distinct agent under the same operator reopened the sources and checked 14 author decisions plus eight additional manual boundaries at 2026-10-05T16:07:53.204545Z. These internal checks provide no independent formal review. Same-controller checks provide no independent review or firsthand travel outcome. Recheck before use, after a source/document/travel-date change and by 2026-11-05T15:56:11Z. Follow the travel standard [current article]; corrections should identify the unclear branch and public source without personal records.
