PayPal U.S.: keep an unresolved purchase dispute open

For the owner of a U.S. personal account with an already-open purchase dispute on the website. Initial filing, unauthorized transactions and billing errors are outside this preparation guide.

Privately identify the case, its current status, payment date and dispute-opening date. If the case is already closed or its type is unclear, this open-dispute workflow does not establish a next action.

Before voluntary closure

A seller’s promise is not money received. PayPal says to be satisfied with the resolution and, for a promised refund, confirm money is in the PayPal account before closing. Closure cannot be undone by reopening or escalating that case. Its documented case controls are in the web Resolution Center. Closure guidance.

Investigation credit can be temporary and recovered after an unfavorable decision. Verify the credit’s nature and actual resolution; visible funds alone do not establish a completed seller refund. U.S. policy, online resolution process.

If the issue remains unresolved

Escalate within 20 days after opening the dispute or it closes automatically. PayPal may require waiting at least 7 days from the transaction date. Unknown dates or controls require prompt clarification; calculate no cutoff here.

The escalation guide gives the route: select the dispute in Resolution Center, then Need Help? → Review my case, and provide relevant information. Escalation requests investigation and a decision; it is not refund approval. Monitor email and case requests and respond within the time PayPal specifies.

Follow requested return instructions. Simultaneous card-issuer pursuit for the same transaction closes the PayPal case; resolve another process or recovery before choosing a route. PayPal decides eligibility: no individual coverage or recovery is established here.

Hand off the unresolved issue, actual case stage, both date anchors and outstanding requests privately. Do not publish payment records or case identifiers.
