UPS U.S. Access Point pickup: confirm readiness and the collector's ID route
Use this preparation procedure for collection from a staffed UPS Access Point location in the United States, whether redirected after an attempted delivery or shipped there directly. It covers ordinary parcel pickup identification; lockers, UPS Customer Centers, non-U.S. locations, C.O.D., regulated goods and My Choice for business release forms need their own instructions.
Confirm the package is available before traveling
Track the actual shipment through UPS. An unsuccessful delivery attempt or a notice suggesting redirection does not establish pickup readiness. For a redirected package, UPS says to confirm the location and “Awaiting Customer Pickup” before going. Tracking also supplies the pickup location's hours and map. See UPS Delivery Notice, “Redirected to a UPS Pickup Location”.
UPS defines “Delivered to a UPS Access Point” as the selected location having received the package and being ready for collection. That status establishes the carrier's reported readiness, not that the recipient has collected it. See UPS tracking status meanings.
Check the actual location, hours, last available pickup date and special shipment instructions. Use the package-specific date in tracking; the shipper can modify the holding period. Do not calculate a deadline from the attempted-delivery date. UPS U.S. terms, section 17, printed page 15.
Choose the identification route
Compare the collector's government-issued photo ID with the package details. UPS lists these four options in the pickup section of its Identification Requirements FAQ:
| Option | Prepare for the counter |
|---|---|
| 1 | Photo ID whose last name and full address match the package, including any suite or apartment number. |
| 2 | Photo ID with the matching last name. If its address differs, also bring proof of residency matching the package address, such as a current utility bill. |
| 3 | Photo ID with a matching full address or name. If the last name or full address differs, also provide the package tracking number. |
| 4 | Photo ID plus the shipper-provided package release code, if required. |
For option 3, a tracking number does not remove the initial name-or-full-address match. If neither matches, that option does not support collection. Confirm another applicable route rather than assuming possession of tracking information grants authority.
If shipment notifications or tracking say a release code is required, obtain it from the shipper. It is a four-to-six-digit numeric code, different from the tracking number. Under the selected release-code service it must be presented; UPS cannot supply it. Bring photo ID as the FAQ instructs. UPS U.S. terms, section 17.3, printed pages 15–16.
Before sending another collector
Check the actual shipment's selected service and restrictions with the shipper or UPS if unclear. Deliver to Addressee Only, when selected for Ship to a UPS Access Point service, permits only the person identified on the label; third-party pickup is prohibited. Otherwise, prepare the collector's own applicable ID route and any required code. A recipient's permission alone does not establish that the shipment permits delegation. UPS may require further verification of name, address or authority before release. UPS U.S. terms, sections 17–17.2, printed page 15.
If the location cannot find the package, readiness is unclear or collection is refused, keep receipt unconfirmed. Ask what information or restriction is unresolved and use the UPS Help and Support Center or the shipper for the next step. This checklist does not guarantee release.
Sources checked October 5, 2026 UTC; cited U.S. terms effective April 17, 2026. Thirteen synthetic manual decision checks were performed against the documents; no private tracking lookup, account action or firsthand pickup occurred. A distinct creator-controlled checker reopened the cited readiness, ID and current terms sources and walked through nine additional boundary cases. These source and desk checks provide no independent formal review coverage or observed pickup result. Recheck on a changed source or shipment restriction, reported discrepancy, or November 5, 2026. Feedback should identify the exact revision, U.S. location class, affected step and actual result; omit tracking numbers, addresses, identity documents and release codes.
