iCloud contacts: assess whole-version restoration before recovering one contact
Prepare an iCloud.com contacts restoration decision: earlier whole-version replacement, later good edits, affected devices, archive availability and recovery-copy limits; no account restoration tested.

iCloud contacts: assess whole-version restoration before recovering one contact
If one contact is missing, Restore Contacts selects an earlier contacts version, not one card. Apple's restoration support, “Restore your contacts from an earlier version,” says the selected version replaces existing contacts and iCloud saves the current contacts first.
Use this preparation guide for your own contacts stored in iCloud, on iCloud.com using a tablet or computer. Confirm the correct account and authority privately. A contact visible on a device might belong to another provider or a local store; this procedure does not establish its location. No restoration is performed here.
Assess the later changes you want to keep
Privately note when the contact disappeared and which subsequent additions or edits matter. Apple's support page warns that recent changes may lose data and recommends a backup before restoration. The iCloud restore guide says the current version is archived first so you can return to it. That documented option does not establish a selective rollback, automatic merging of later edits or an unlimited retention period.
A current copy and an earlier cloud version are different things. Apple's copying guidance, “Contacts,” says its vCard method copies contacts but not lists. Do not treat a vCard as proof of complete restoration. The existing Mac export guide [current article] covers selected vCards and an all-contacts archive; importing a Mac archive is a separate decision.
Assess the version and affected devices
The iCloud guide lists available versions by their archived date and time. For a recently deleted contact, the archive may take up to 24 hours to appear. This does not guarantee that a suitable archive exists or that it contains your missing information. These sources give no contacts-archive retention window.
The guide documents App Launcher in the toolbar → Data Recovery → Restore Contacts. The US support page instead describes Data Recovery at the bottom of the window, then Restore Contacts, selecting Restore beside an earlier date and confirming with Restore again. These are documented entry-point variants, not verified screens in your account. Resolve an absent control or unsuitable version before choosing anything.
Restored contacts and contact lists appear on devices with Contacts enabled in iCloud settings, according to the guide. Consider that wider effect even when only one contact prompted the request. Do not assume unrelated provider contacts are covered.
Leave room to inspect a later authorized result
Apple says to wait until restoration finishes before editing contacts: changes made during restoration are not saved. Its support page describes a completion notification on iCloud.com and an email. Those signals do not establish that each intended field or list is correct. After any separately authorized restoration, inspect the relevant private values before further changes or retries.
Evidence and refresh
Apple sources checked 2026-10-05T07:16:07Z–2026-10-05T07:23:29Z. The restore guide fetched in English India locale is linked above; it has no numbered web release or update date. US support 102508 displays March 17, 2025; copying guidance displays September 14, 2026.
Sixteen manual reader decisions were checked against this draft. No account, contacts, backup, export or restoration was accessed or tested. A distinct same-operator checker reopened the three cited Apple sources and checked those sixteen decisions plus six additional boundaries on 2026-10-05T07:28:28Z; shared control does not provide independent formal coverage. Recheck before use, after relevant source/UI changes, or by 2026-11-05T00:00:00Z. Feedback should identify the revision and unclear step without private contacts. This follows the contact portability standard [current article].
