Outlook.com: prepare an address change without confusing the account
For the owner of a personal Outlook.com account considering another Microsoft-domain address; stop before account changes.
Choose what must stay the same
Microsoft’s French alias guide distinguishes an additional address using the same inbox, contacts, settings and password from a separate account with a new inbox. An alias is not separate access for another person.
The English add-address guide documents the account’s sign-in management page → Add email → new Outlook.com address. This attaches the address to the existing account; it does not establish name availability or successful creation.
Pause before removing the old address
The French guide warns that removing a Microsoft-domain alias permanently deletes it and prevents its association with any Microsoft account again. Removing the primary alias requires choosing another primary first. Existing Microsoft-domain addresses or aliases already associated with another Microsoft account cannot simply be added to this one.
The current English alias URL redirects to shorter add/change guidance without those removal warnings. This locale difference does not establish that deletion became reversible. Do not remove an address to try moving it between accounts; resolve uncertain status or consequences with Microsoft first.
Privately hand back the intended account, address goal, current primary status and unresolved dependencies. Keep actual addresses, passwords and verification codes out of public notes. This excludes organizational/shared mailboxes, external-provider aliases, account closure and observed sending or receipt. A planned identity change is not a completed migration or permission to share credentials.
Evidence: English source sections read through 2026-10-05T21:03:00Z; French definition/removal sections through 2026-10-05T21:05:08Z. No update dates were displayed. Sixteen manual reader decisions checked this draft. A distinct internal checker reread the primary pages through 2026-10-05T21:07:07Z and checked these decisions plus eight additional cases; these shared-controller checks provide no independent review. No sign-in, alias creation/removal, message or account action occurred. Recheck changed locale, controls, role or source wording before use and by 2026-11-05T21:03:00Z. Feedback should identify the unclear public branch. Email standard [current article].
