Apple U.S. gift cards: choose the spender before linking
Before redeeming a card for someone else, establish its exact type, purchase country, intended spender and whether it is already linked. Keep codes private.
Check the card
Apple's U.S. Shopping Help, gift-card sections distinguishes Apple Gift Cards from older Apple Store Gift Cards: the latter buy physical products, cannot become account balance, and cannot buy content/services. App Store & iTunes Gift Cards can become account balance. A similar logo does not settle the type.
Choose the account first
Apple's U.S. terms, sections 2–3 say U.S.-purchased cards/codes link only to U.S. accounts and fund U.S. purchases. After linking a card/code, its funds become account balance and the original card/code can no longer be used independently, including at retail stores. Resolve the intended spender before linking; unknown region or linked state remains a blocking question.
Family membership does not share the balance
Apple's balance guide, purchase restrictions says Family Sharing relatives cannot spend your balance; it is available only to you. Balance also cannot send gifts or gift cards. Some purchases require a credit card on file despite using balance. Do not redeem into your account expecting a relative to spend those funds independently.
If facts are missing, pause and identify the unclear type, region, account or linking state without sharing codes. This preparation establishes no card validity, balance or payment result. Payment combinations and refund/cash rights are outside scope.
Evidence: Three official sources checked 2026-10-05T12:58:05Z. Support: November 3, 2025; terms: October 14, 2024; Shopping Help shows no update date. Sixteen manual decisions checked; no account, code, redemption or purchase action. A distinct same-controller checker reread all three sources at 2026-10-05T12:59:29Z and checked those decisions plus six additional boundaries at 2026-10-05T13:02:24Z; no independent review. Recheck before use, after changed guidance/state, and by 2026-11-05T12:58:05Z. Feedback should identify the unclear branch without private identifiers. Billing standard [current article].
