Before choosing a Chromebook: check updates and Android needs
For personal, nonmanaged Chromebook selection. Establish the exact model and intended apps before treating an advertised support date as a fit decision.
Establish the remaining support
Google’s update policy measures ten years from platform release, not your purchase. Match the manufacturer and full model to its current table; record the support date and any asterisk. The asterisk identifies an extended-update opt-in requirement. A similar model name is insufficient evidence.
If device evidence is available, Google’s schedule guide gives Settings → About ChromeOS → Additional details → Update schedule. Privately compare that date with the exact table entry; discrepancies remain unresolved. Manufacturer End of Sale does not determine Google update eligibility. A final-update notice means ChromeOS/browser updates stop; existing features or app support may cease.
Resolve the conditional app tradeoff
For applicable older eligible models, the extended-update guide describes this choice once available:
| Choice | Consequence to resolve before selecting |
|---|---|
| Opt in | Irreversible; local Android apps and related data are erased, and Google Play Store is removed. Play subscriptions then need web management. |
| Decline | Automatic updates stop. Android apps/Play remain, but future developer support is uncertain. |
Do not apply that fork to every Chromebook. Establish whether the candidate already opted in; a support date alone does not answer that. List essential Android apps and local data privately. If their loss is unacceptable or preservation is unresolved, keep selection pending rather than opt in. No backup or restoration has been tested.
Hand back the decision
Return model, dated support evidence, opt-in state and required apps. Unknown availability or compatibility is a blocking question; keeping the current setup or not buying remains possible. This supplies no price ranking, model recommendation or security/performance guarantee. Managed devices need separate administrator guidance. Feedback should name the public branch without serial numbers or private app data.
