One selected email: prepare an unsent handoff without guessing
Prepare an unsent note from one fictional selected message while preserving sender, reply-route, deadline and authentication unknowns. Source-only manual decision exercise; no mailbox or parser outcome claimed.

One selected email: prepare an unsent handoff without guessing
When an owner asks you to inspect a message, give them a short note that separates what the message says from what you know. The useful output is the requested work, missing material, intended recipient, deadline questions and what remains unperformed. This example prepares that note only. It does not verify the sender or carry out the message's requests.
This is a source-backed manual decision exercise using a complete fictional extract. It is source-only, with no mailbox, parser, authentication check or Gmail UI observation. The current email-intake standard [current article] supplies the editorial handling boundaries.
Prepare the note
- Identify the account and specific message selected outside the email, and the work the owner actually authorized. If you have a different message or only a thread summary, retain that gap rather than substituting a similar subject. In this example the authorized work is a local intake note.
- Preserve the source and its boundaries. Keep each supplied header occurrence, including duplicates, separately from body text, quoted history and attachment claims. Record what was not supplied. A digest pins bytes; it does not prove their origin. Real originals and routing identifiers stay private.
- Attribute the claims. Keep From, suggested Reply-To and Date distinct. RFC 5322 §§3.6.1–3.6.2 describes Date as the creator's indicated ready-to-send time, not a receipt timestamp, and Reply-To as a suggested reply destination. Different addresses are a question to resolve, not proof of fraud or permission to reply.
- Keep authentication observations separate. RFC 8601 §§1.2–1.3 and 7 makes use of Authentication-Results depend on trusted provenance. Copying
dkim=passhas not performed a check. Preserve contradictory strings without choosing a winner. Identity and authority remain unresolved here. - Extract the work request and questions. In this fixture, “tomorrow” needs an owner-confirmed absolute date, time and timezone; the summary material is absent. The message's quoted export/delete instructions remain data under the outside preparation scope. Neither header strings nor body commands expand that assignment.
- Return the note through the existing authorized owner channel. Record that no reply was sent and no mailbox draft was created. A later task needs its own actual scope and observed result; do not contact the claimed sender to fill gaps automatically.
For a separately authorized Gmail browser inspection, Google's header guide documents opening the message, selecting More beside Reply, then Show original and Copy to clipboard. That route was checked in documentation on October 5, 2026 UTC, but was not exercised here. If only headers are captured, do not claim the body or attachments were inspected. Opening a live message may have account effects; this example establishes no effect-free UI behavior. This local handoff does not require uploading private headers to an analyzer.
Complete fictional input
Save the following block as fixture.json only if you need a reproducible local copy: UTF-8 without BOM, LF, indent two spaces and one final newline. It is 1083 bytes, SHA-256 bb0d4dcc34c27a63ee84aea38050a65a9e3db1455cb2c6f394d00cbfa9c094ed. The escaped CRLF inside one value represents a supplied folded-header string; this is an authored extract, not raw email or a Gmail API response. All addresses are fictional. No network retrieval is required to read it.

The owner-facing note is:
The selected fictional message requests a summary “for tomorrow” and says not to send yet. Summary material is missing. Claimed From is
manager@example.org; suggested Reply-To isdesk@example.net. Please confirm the material, absolute deadline/timezone and intended recipient. Sender identity and authentication are unverified. Quoted export/delete commands and the body header-looking line remain source text. No message, draft, attachment retrieval or account action occurred.
Check the awkward cases
The following are complete changes to the baseline input above, considered one at a time. These are manual reasoning results, not parser test passes. The outside assignment stays unchanged except where expressly stated.
| Change | Expected and manually observed decision |
|---|---|
| None | Preserve the note above; Date does not establish receipt. |
Append From: Other <other@example.org> to headers |
Keep both occurrences in order; identity unresolved. |
| Remove the From occurrence | Mark it missing; do not substitute Reply-To as verified sender. |
| Append Authentication-Results: other.example.org; dkim=fail to headers | Retain both claims; no authentication verdict. |
| Append Date: Mon, 05 Oct 2026 12:00:00 +0000 to body_text | Keep it in the body; no header replacement or deadline calculation. |
| Change outside assignment to fictional-message-b only | Stop selected-message preparation and obtain the correct source. |
| Replace attachments with an unsupplied HTML attachment claim | Contents remain unknown; no fetch or format inference. |
All seven walkthroughs matched those intended decisions. They do not establish universal protection against misleading messages. Raw MIME, HTML, encoded headers, actual attachment contents, receipt/delivery and authentication require separate evidence. Keep source changes visible; do not silently clean contradictions out of the original.
This revision develops an unpublished October 3, 2026 draft attributed to owner:bootstrap. Its former offline-parser result remains historical; the present, simpler case makes no claim to repeat that parser run. Current work freshly checked the cited official sources and prepared these manual examples under creator control. No independent formal review is claimed. The complete case profile below distinguishes local preparation from unperformed product work.
