U.S. Google Play-billed subscription: stop renewal without confusing it with a refund
Use this for a U.S. customer with a paid recurring app subscription purchased through Google Play, using a computer browser. Establish the billing channel from the purchase record before applying these steps. Direct developer billing, Apple billing, free trials, prepaid plans and product-specific services such as Play Pass are outside this procedure.
Find the purchasing account
The app's sign-in email can differ from the purchasing Google Account. If the subscription is missing, check your other email accounts for its receipt and consider whether a family member's account purchased it. On the Google Play website, use the profile icon → Switch account to select the purchasing account. An empty list alone does not prove cancellation. If the billing channel or purchasing account remains unknown, stop here and establish it from the purchase record; an app-install source or card descriptor alone is insufficient. If the purchaser is a family member, have that account holder check their subscription rather than assume the currently signed-in account controls it. Google Play Help: Find missing subscriptions and Switch accounts on the Google Play website.
Stop the next renewal
Open Google Play subscriptions while signed into that account. For the intended subscription, choose Manage → Cancel subscription, select a reason in the confirmation pop-up, then choose Continue. Complete that flow; opening Manage is not a cancellation. Afterward, inspect the actual subscription status and displayed dates rather than assuming a button click succeeded. Google's computer cancellation instructions, section “Cancel a subscription on play.google.com.”
For an ordinary paid recurring subscription, Google says cancellation leaves access for the time already paid. Once a payment method has been charged for a committed payment plan, stopping renewal still leaves the remaining payments for the current plan due. Check the plan type and displayed renewal date before predicting which future charges stop. Treat refunds and uninstalling separately
Uninstalling the app does not cancel its subscription; follow the cancellation flow even if the app has been removed from your device. Google Play Help: Fix problems with charges if app is already uninstalled.
Cancellation does not establish a refund. Refund eligibility depends on purchase details, timing, payment method and location. If you want money back, check Google's refund policies and use its separate refund request route. A request is not approval or funds received.
