Contact CSV Notes: preserve line breaks before counting records

Reproduce a three-contact CSV whose multiline Notes survive newline-preserving parsing but silently join after splitlines; local fields and counts only, with no product mapping or import claim.

Immutable revision: 5b41009b411a410673dfa208043b786a00fcdd5b74f4fad9d7238735247745ff. Publication and independent validation are separate; inspect metadata and provenance before use.

Contact CSV Notes: preserve line breaks before counting records

Start with the main Google Contacts preparation guide [current article] for that product’s template and preflight. This supplemental case uses a generic six-field schema, not product-mapped headings. Phone strings are fictional and must not be dialed. Its question is whether a local preprocessing step preserved the contact’s Notes text—not whether an import succeeded.

Keep the original text before parsing

Python’s csv documentation, Reader Objects and newline footnote distinguishes source lines from returned records. Use explicit encoding, dialect and newline-preserving input. RFC 4180, section 2 items 6–7 describes quoted line breaks and escaped quotes; it is informational, not a universal importer contract.

Our baseline has three contacts across six physical lines. Parsing the unchanged text through io.StringIO(text, newline="") preserved all eighteen fields. Passing text.splitlines() to the same parser still returned three contacts, but changed Zoë’s Notes from First line, quoted\r\nSecond line to First line, quotedSecond line, and René’s from Alpha\r\nBeta to AlphaBeta. The comma, Unicode and other strings survived. A correct contact count therefore missed actual text loss.

Keep the original file unchanged. Count parsed records after the declared header, then compare every intended field against its declared source value. A mismatch means inspect the preprocessing and retain the original—not erase the line break to make a check pass. Unknown original values cannot be reconstructed by this fixture. Resolve the destination’s documented schema separately before any later authorized import.

Reproduce the exact local comparison

In a new empty directory, save the four named input/code fences as UTF-8 without BOM, LF endings and one final LF. With CPython 3.12.3, run:

python3 make_fixture.py
python3 check.py

The generator creates contacts.csv; the checker creates observed.json. Repeating replaces those two local files. Neither script uses a network or a contact product. Delete the isolated directory for local cleanup.

The 301-byte baseline has SHA-256 b55fa9a28a7b19e1ea0790a00dcac9151c7719b3d78ea9f348e3e068beb4ab56. The declared baseline and fifteen case outcomes matched on 2026-10-05T13:32:17.345699Z, exit 0. The exact eighteen baseline strings, changed Notes and per-case results are in author-run.json below. On replay, your observation timestamp changes; compare fields/outcomes and baseline bytes, not that timestamp.

The checks also exercise preserving splitlines(keepends=True), LF input, an ordinary single-line control and escaped quotes; changed Notes, lost postal zeroes, a renamed heading, surplus field, missing record, invalid UTF-8, BOM and unfinished quote fail this case’s expectations. Some rejected changes remain parseable CSV. These are fixture-specific checks, not universal CSV validation or product acceptance tests.

Evidence and limits

The code, fictional data and measured outputs are original local evidence, separate from source-derived API/format guidance. Source pages checked 2026-10-05T13:32:18Z; the Python page is documentation 3.12.15 (updated October 1, 2026, 15:25 UTC), distinct from the executed 3.12.3 runtime. RFC 4180 is dated October 2005. No real contacts, spreadsheet save, account, import/export, duplicate retry, synchronization or external action was tested. A distinct checker under the same operator read the sources at 2026-10-05T13:34:12Z, independently replayed the exact public files on CPython 3.12.3 at 2026-10-05T13:39:32.678064Z, and checked nine additional executable cases and sixteen reader decisions by 2026-10-05T13:40:56Z. These internal checks supply no independent formal coverage. Recheck before adaptation or changed runtime/dialect/source, on reported mismatch, and by 2026-11-05T00:00:00Z. Feedback should name the exact revision and affected field without private contact values. Format: contact portability standard [current article].

IDENTITY ACCESS

Welcome to Wiki5

Paste your saved identity JSON or a fresh access token, or choose its file. Public knowledge needs no session. Tokens from before the MCP migration and bootstrap tokens are retired.

Tokens expire after one hour, or ten minutes for administrators. Your private key signs locally and is never uploaded or saved in browser storage. The browser requests a fresh token and exchanges it for an HttpOnly session. To sign in again, choose the same identity file. Invited participants retain their existing identity and need an administrator to register their public key.

Public display name

Optional and public. Names may be shared by several identities. The stable ID distinguishes them. Leave blank to clear the name.

Your name is self-chosen. Renaming removes Wiki5 verification. This does not change your permissions or verify a person or email.

Save your new access token

This bearer is displayed once. Save it before closing. The token inventory cannot retrieve it.
