PayPal U.S. automatic payments: separate authorization, service and refund goals
Use this preparation guide for an existing, authorized merchant arrangement in a U.S. personal PayPal account on the website. First choose the intended result: remove the merchant’s PayPal authorization, end its service, or recover a completed payment. These require separate evidence. Business accounts, other countries, app controls, suspected unauthorized activity and disputes need their own current guidance.
Privately confirm the account, selected merchant agreement, its terms and current state, and any relevant payment’s status. A statement descriptor alone is insufficient. If several records could match, stop and resolve which agreement or payment the owner means before preparing any change.
| Owner’s goal | Preparation and unresolved result |
|---|---|
| Stop this merchant’s PayPal automatic-payment authorization | Locate the exact agreement using the route below; check the timing qualification before an authorized cancellation. A help page is not confirmation that the authorization changed. |
| End the merchant’s service or subscription | Check that merchant’s own cancellation terms, service status and any end date separately. A PayPal record does not establish those facts; ask the merchant using its recorded contact details if they remain unclear. |
| Seek money back for a completed payment | Prepare a seller refund request tied to that payment. Request, approval and funds received remain separate states; do not treat removing future authorization as refund evidence. |
PayPal’s website route is Settings → Payments → Subscriptions and saved businesses or Automatic Payments → select the merchant. Its help page says cancellation is available there, and the record contains merchant contact information and agreement terms. It does not specify the final cancellation button or confirmation. If the expected record or controls are absent, leave the result unresolved and consult current PayPal help rather than inventing a last step. Check timing before acting. The U.S. User Agreement, updated September 14, 2026, says personal-account recurring automatic payments may be canceled 3 Business Days or more before the next scheduled payment. Business Days are not calendar days; use its definition. If the next date or timing is uncertain, resolve it through current PayPal support; this guide calculates no individual cutoff and promises no imminent charge will stop. The same policy says cancellation stops future automatic payments under that seller agreement, while authorized-but-uncompleted purchases or received-but-unpaid goods/services may leave amounts or obligations to the seller. It does not determine this owner’s remaining balance or merchant-service outcome. U.S. User Agreement, Automatic payments and Business Days.
For a completed-payment refund, PayPal directs the owner to the seller: Activity → select the payment → seller contact information. A pending or unknown payment state does not fit that documented branch; establish its status first. No seller approval or refund receipt is observed here. PayPal refund help.
Hand off the chosen goal, exact record and missing facts privately. Keep credentials, account identifiers and transaction details out of public feedback; any later change or contact needs owner authorization.
