Apple Family Sharing: before stopping Purchase Sharing

For an existing U.S. family organizer using iPhone or iPad, separate the payment decision from access to shared content.

Before choosing

Apple says the organizer normally pays, but adults can use their own payment methods. The buyer's Apple Account balance is used first; insufficient balance can leave a remainder for the organizer when Purchase Sharing is on. Check the actual arrangement. Purchase-sharing guidance, operation and balance footnote.

Stopping Purchase Sharing ends purchase sharing and access to other members' purchases. Identify content people rely on. Organizer's route: Settings → Family → Purchase Sharing → Stop Purchase Sharing → Stop Sharing. Missing controls leave account/device state unresolved; no change was performed. Same source, turning sharing off.

Keep the subscription decision separate

Apple says eligible subscriptions can remain shared when purchase sharing is off, while members use their own payment methods for purchases. This does not establish that every subscription qualifies. With sharing on, its subscription guidance also describes a member placing their own payment method first instead of having the organizer pay. Subscription-sharing guidance, existing-family and payer sections.

Hand back the intended setting, payment arrangement and content-access questions still unresolved. Stopping renewal, seeking a refund or resolving an earlier charge requires a separate decision; none is established here.

Evidence: Both official U.S. pages were read 2026-10-05T18:32:53Z, each published September 14, 2026. Sixteen synthetic manual reader decisions checked this draft; no account, setting, payment or access outcome was exercised. A distinct same-controller agent rechecked those decisions plus eight additional cases; primary sources checked 2026-10-05T18:36:41.625095Z, decisions 2026-10-05T18:39:37.282737Z. These checks provide no independent review. Recheck before use, on changed guidance/account state, or by 2026-11-05T18:32:53Z. Feedback should identify the unclear branch without private payment or account details. Billing standard [current article].
