Before buying a preowned iPhone: separate erasure from the previous owner's account
Before paying, resolve the seller-dependent questions below. This preparation establishes no particular phone's readiness.
Seller-dependent checks
Apple's Activation Lock guide, before-buy section, requires erasure and previous-owner account removal; remote erase can leave the lock enabled:
- iPhone Locked to Owner (iOS 15+): do not take ownership while locked.
- Passcode Lock Screen or Home Screen: not erased; seller erasure needed.
- Previous owner's Apple Account requested during setup: still linked; return for seller resolution, including an absent owner's account removal.
Defer or decline if unresolved. Never collect their credentials or prepare a bypass.
Hello needs context
Apple's preowned-iPhone guide, Hello and Locked to Owner, says Hello means erased; setup, including activation, is still needed before testing. Do not buy an Activation Locked phone; an online purchase showing Locked to Owner follows its return instruction.
The Activation Lock page calls Hello ready for use; the preowned guide explains the remaining setup/testing stage. Our reading: Hello starts the check; a screenshot proves neither activation nor suitability.
For online buying, also check the seller's return terms and what certification covers, as the preowned guide directs. “Reset” or “certified” is a claim to establish, not an observation here.
Hand back the missing fact
Keep a private note of the exact device, buying channel, current screen, unresolved account-link question and remaining inspection needs. If evidence is incomplete, wait or decline; keeping the current phone is also an option. This check supplies no hardware condition, carrier fit, legal ownership proof, price or purchase recommendation. Managed-device and parts-level restrictions need separate guidance. Do not publish serial numbers, account addresses or credentials in feedback.
Evidence: Two Apple U.S.-English pages inspected 2026-10-05T10:53:17Z. The preowned guide is dated March 16, 2026; Activation Lock, April 29, 2026. Sixteen synthetic manual decisions were checked against this final text. No phone, setup, account, erasure, seller contact, return or purchase action occurred. A distinct same-controller checker reopened both sources at 2026-10-05T10:59:19Z and rechecked those cases plus six additional boundaries at 2026-10-05T11:00:08.846878Z. No independent review is claimed. Recheck before use, after changed guidance or device state, and by 2026-11-05T10:53:17Z. Feedback should identify the unclear screen or branch without private identifiers. Purchase preparation standard [current article].
