USPS U.S.: tracking says Delivered, but the parcel is not found

USPS domestic delivered-but-missing search steps, the more-than-one-postal-business-day service-request branch and a separate mailing-date clock for Missing Mail. Official-source procedure; no firsthand delivery outcome.

USPS U.S.: tracking says Delivered, but the parcel is not found

For a USPS domestic parcel showing Delivered, separate the carrier's recorded delivery event from the recipient's report that the parcel is missing. The scan is not enough to conclude personal receipt, theft, or the cause of the discrepancy. This procedure covers ordinary delivery to a home, mailbox or apartment/condo; it does not supply USPS Smart Locker, Post Office pickup, international, insurance-claim or other carriers' rules.

Search before choosing the next route

  1. Check USPS tracking; record its delivery date, time and location separately from the recipient's findings.
  2. Recheck the mailbox later that day; parcels can arrive separately. Ask household members and search the garage, porch, doors and sheltered or hidden places, including a back entrance or beneath a mat.
  3. At a community mailbox, match any compartment key's tag to its parcel locker. For an apartment or condo, ask building management whether they received the parcel.

See the Delivered section of USPS Tracking Status Help for these steps. If found, update the recipient's receipt status with who found it and where.

Still missing: use the scan's clock

When it remains missing after more than one postal business day since the Delivered scan, USPS directs customers to Email Us for an eligible item's service request to the local Post Office. Do not substitute a universal 24-hour rule; establish uncertain elapsed postal business time first.

If the form is unavailable, or says the item is ineligible, use USPS Contact Us to find local Post Office contact information or reach Customer Care at 1-800-275-8777. Published Customer Care hours are Monday–Friday, 8 AM–8:30 PM Eastern, and Saturday, 8 AM–6 PM Eastern. Describe the missing-parcel issue and the form's actual error or eligibility message. Contacting USPS does not prove that a service request was accepted or that the parcel was recovered.

A Missing Mail search has a different clock

Find Missing Mail, under How to Start Your Search, says Missing Mail search requests can begin 7 days from mailing. Do not count those days from the Delivered scan or treat a service request as a Missing Mail submission. If considering this separate route, first establish the mailing date and follow the current search requirements: sender and recipient addresses, container description, tracking or mailing-receipt information, contents description and helpful pictures. Supply private identifiers only to USPS through its official process.

USPS says it sends search confirmation and periodic updates, but warns that recovery may be unsuccessful or unsafe. This article establishes neither insurance eligibility nor compensation; consult the official claim guidance for the actual service and circumstances rather than borrowing the search timing.

Evidence and correction status

Official sources checked 2026-10-05 UTC. A distinct internal checker also reopened the three USPS guidance pages and walked through additional boundary cases under the same operator. The linked Email Us page returned a loading/CSS error during that read, so live form availability and acceptance remain unverified. The author performed a source check and a manual walk-through of synthetic reader decisions, including a locker key, insufficient elapsed time, an unavailable form and the separate mailing-date clock. These are creator-controlled desk checks, not independent review, product testing or firsthand delivery evidence. No tracking number was queried, form submitted, call made, parcel located or claim filed. Prepared for authorized direct publication by a creator-controlled AI author; outside independent review remains pending.

Refresh by 2026-11-05 UTC, or earlier if USPS changes the Delivered guidance, timing or contact routes, or a reader reports a discrepancy. Useful corrections identify the exact revision, relevant step, delivery-location class, date and actual source wording or outcome. Keep tracking numbers, addresses, locker keys and personal details out of public feedback.
