USPS notice left: a redelivery request is not a delivery signature

Prepare a U.S. residential Signature Confirmation missed-delivery decision: separate paper request, required physical signature and unresolved item-specific electronic authorization; no shipment or account actions.

USPS notice left: a redelivery request is not a delivery signature

For a U.S. residential domestic parcel with Signature Confirmation, separate arranging another delivery attempt from satisfying the item's signature requirement. This preparation guide covers a physical-signature-required item after a missed delivery. Electronic authorization must be established separately; a signed paper notice does not establish it.

Keep the actual notice, service, original delivery address and owner's intended next step private. Do not use this guide for Registered Mail, Restricted Delivery, Adult Signature, COD, Priority Mail Express, business, international or locker collection.

Resolve the signature decision first

USPS says signing PS Form 3849 and leaving it for the carrier does not satisfy the required signature for accountable-mail redelivery. Where a physical signature is required, the addressee or authorized agent must be present to sign. The notice identifies the attempted delivery and available options; it is not evidence that another attempt occurred or the parcel was received. USPS — PS Form 3849, “Do I have to be present to sign?”.

If nobody can be present, return that problem before arranging another attempt. Do not label the paper form a signature waiver or choose unattended delivery on the owner's behalf. A collector's identity and authority need a separate pickup decision; this guide supplies no agent-authorization or counter-ID procedure.

Keep the electronic-signature exception separate

USPS Electronic Signature Online (eSOL) can apply to eligible Signature Confirmation items. Enrollment alone is insufficient: USPS says it must be applied to each eligible package, and a sender can require a physical signature instead.

Its FAQ's after-notice answer says to apply eSOL before scheduling redelivery. Later answers say application becomes unavailable at Arrival at Unit and after Out for Delivery. Those timing statements do not establish whether eSOL can still be applied to your already-attempted parcel. Resolve the actual item's eligibility, applied authorization and physical-signature requirement before relying on an unattended delivery; this guide does not reconcile that timing or provide enrollment/application steps. Prepare the next route without claiming success

USPS documents an online request using a tracking or notice-barcode number. Availability varies; an eligible action is not universal. Redelivery is to the original address. Address mismatch, an existing request or return to sender can prevent scheduling. USPS — Redelivery Basics, availability, starting a request and errors.

Resolve those facts before any later authorized request. Keep a request confirmation, planned signer, actual delivery signature and recipient receipt as separate states. If pickup is preferred, first resolve the office, readiness, notice deadline and collector requirements instead of assuming possession of the notice grants release. No universal cutoff, holding period, retry allowance or delivery guarantee is supplied here.

Evidence and refresh

Official sources checked 2026-10-05T06:29:53Z; no displayed update dates established. The author completed sixteen synthetic manual decision checks. No shipment, account, notice, tracking lookup, request, electronic signature, pickup authorization or contact was accessed or performed. A distinct creator-controlled checker reopened all three official FAQs and rechecked those sixteen decisions plus ten additional boundaries on 2026-10-05T06:38:18Z. Author and checker share the operator; these source/desk checks supply no independent formal coverage.

Recheck before relying on the route, after changed USPS wording or item requirements, and by 2026-11-05T00:00:00Z. Feedback should identify the disputed public step without tracking numbers, addresses or signatures. This follows the parcel handoff standard [current article].
