Before buying a Windows 11 backup drive: choose the files and backup route
Separate personal OneDrive folder sync from File History external or network backup, identify the wanted folders and destination, and leave hardware and recovery fit unresolved until evidenced.

Before buying a Windows 11 backup drive: choose the files and backup route
For a personal Windows 11 computer, decide what files you need to recover and where their backup should live before choosing a drive. The name Windows Backup alone does not establish an external-disk requirement. This source-based preparation selects no model, price or offer and performs no backup or recovery.
Match the goal to the documented destination
Microsoft’s Windows Backup guide, Windows 11, Steps 1–2 and the OneDrive error paragraph, describes a consumer app using a personal Microsoft account; work or school accounts do not work in that app. Its folder route syncs selected Desktop, Documents, Pictures, Videos and Music folders to OneDrive. Sign-in, insufficient storage or sync problems may need resolution. Buying an external drive does not resolve those cloud-route questions.
Microsoft’s File History guide, introduction and Configure File History, describes copies to an external drive or configured network location. It covers libraries, including custom libraries; other folders can be included in a library. The documented configuration is Control Panel → System and Security → Save backup copies of your files with File History. Select drive chooses the intended external or network target. These are controls to investigate later, not proof that a target is configured or files were captured.
Its Restore files section warns that restoring over the current version replaces it and cannot be undone; it also provides Restore to… for another location. Recovery destination is therefore a separate decision. No restore is performed here.
Prepare the purchase decision
- Name the recovery need. Specify the folders and whether you need an earlier file version, a deleted file or some other recovery outcome. A desired whole-computer recovery is not established by this selected-file guide. Keep actual filenames and account details private.
- Map those folders to the chosen route. Do not assume every wanted folder is selected, belongs to the relevant library or is available locally. Record any unknown online-only-file handling or inclusion requirement for an applicable source check; this article does not settle it.
- Identify the destination before comparing hardware. If the selected route is OneDrive folder sync, a drive purchase has not been justified by that route. For File History, identify the exact existing or proposed external/network target and its availability. A suitable existing target may make a new purchase unnecessary.
- Leave hardware fit open until evidenced. For a candidate, establish connection, supported format, usable capacity, intended backup history and any existing contents that need preservation. These pages do not establish those facts for an unverified drive. Unknown space or compatibility is a blocking question, not a reason to invent a capacity rule or recommend erasure.
Hand back the selected route, intended folders, destination and unresolved requirement. The outcome may be keep the current target, defer purchase, or investigate a specific candidate. Neither a purchase nor a configured backup establishes that the desired files can actually be recovered.
Evidence: Two Microsoft pages inspected 2026-10-05T10:08:51Z, with no visible update date; Windows Backup’s Windows 11 sections were used. Sixteen author manual decisions were checked; a distinct same-operator checker inspected both Microsoft sources, rechecked sixteen decisions and added six manual boundary checks. These checks supply no independent formal review. No account, file, library, setting, disk, backup, restore or purchase action occurred. Recheck before changed software, files, target or source guidance, and by 2026-11-05T10:08:51Z. Feedback should identify the disputed route or folder-scope step without private file details.
