Google Tasks on computer: change one repeating occurrence or the series

Prepare a repeating-task handoff using distinct completion, next-occurrence edit, series edit and Calendar deletion scopes. Official Computer guidance with a complete fictional profile and thirteen manual desk decisions; no account action.

Google Tasks on computer: change one repeating occurrence or the series

Before preparing a repeating-task change, identify the selected occurrence and ask whether the owner means one task, the next occurrence, future tasks, or the whole series. Completing, skipping and ending recurrence are different requests. This guide prepares an unsent handoff for a personal Google Tasks series; it performs no account action.

Match the intent to the documented control

Google's Computer repeating-tasks guide, under Edit or complete a recurring task and Delete tasks in a series, distinguishes these routes:

Intended change Documented route
Complete the selected occurrence In the Tasks side panel, use Complete; finished items are under Completed.
Change the next occurrence's date/time In Tasks, click its date.
Change the series date/time In Tasks, click the repetition information.
Edit through Calendar Edit and Save, then choose This task or All tasks.
Delete only the selected occurrence Use Google Calendar and choose This task.
Delete the selected occurrence and later tasks In Calendar, choose This and following tasks.
Delete the series Tasks uses Delete → Delete all; Calendar offers All tasks.

For occurrence-level deletion, use the task dialog opened from the Calendar grid, rather than the Tasks list view inside Calendar. Single-occurrence deletion requires Calendar. The Computer Add or edit a task guide, under Delete a task, also distinguishes Delete all for a repeating task. Do not substitute that list control for an occurrence-only request.

Completion and what comes next

Google says the next repeating instance appears in the Tasks list on the date specified. Do not promise immediate appearance after completion, or invent a completion-relative advancement algorithm. Calendar shows only a limited number of upcoming instances; more appear as time passes. These documented visibility rules do not prove the series ended when an instance is absent from view.

Stopping repetition cannot restart the same series; Google says to create a new series to repeat again. Shared tasks and subtasks cannot repeat, and recurring tasks cannot move to other lists. The companion guide also excludes tasks with subtasks. Treat these as applicability boundaries, not invitations to silently convert, reassign or recreate an item.

This source does not settle the exact next occurrence after early/late completion, missed work, a DST gap/fold, or a time-zone change. Preserve the owner's schedule and end bound and leave those calculations unresolved. If the actual controls or available scope differ, stop and recheck the current Computer guide and selected account context. No mobile, API, shared-task or delegated-account procedure is supplied here.

Prepare a handoff with honest completion evidence

For a request to skip one occurrence while keeping later ones, recommend the documented Calendar This task deletion scope. A skipped occurrence is not completed work. If the request is to record completed work instead, keep the task-state label separate from the owner-agreed work evidence, actor, time and selected occurrence. A completed checkbox alone cannot establish that the work happened or that every occurrence is complete.

Before any later account action, resolve the actual account, selected series/occurrence, current snapshot and operation scope under outside authorization. A repeated title does not identify the occurrence. A changed selection requires a fresh handoff. This article supplies preparation only, with no promise of undo, notification delivery or synchronized account effects.

Complete fictional input

The next block is an authored teaching record, not a Google export, API schema or captured task. All roles, IDs and clocks are fictional. It contains the complete baseline. Its scheduled_day is a date-only owner context, not a deadline, scheduled clock time or reminder. No recurrence dates are computed here.

Save the exact JSON block content plus one final LF as fixture.json: UTF-8 without BOM, 1168 bytes, SHA-256 57426d92bbdc9a9ed55cba2e5d91579029c1642e9e508bef754172a2498b8bc6.

The prepared note is:

Recommend Google Calendar’s This task deletion scope for fictional-desk-reset-2026-10-05 only, preserving later occurrences. Do not use Tasks Delete all or mark skipped work complete. The live account and current selection remain unverified; no task was changed.

Author manual decision checks

The author actually walked through these thirteen synthetic inputs. Each row starts independently from the entire baseline and replaces exactly the listed keys; every other value is unchanged. JSON null and booleans are literal. Expected and observed decisions are desk results, not product tests or actual Google behavior.

Case and complete baseline changes Expected decision Observed author decision
baseline: {} Recommend Calendar This task for occurrence-only skip, with no operation performed. Chose the occurrence-only deletion scope, retained later tasks and did not describe work as done.
complete-without-work: {"task_state":"complete; fictional snapshot"} Task state does not prove desk cleared or whole series complete. Kept work evidence, actor/time and real account results unobserved; baseline skip request still does not authorize completion.
next-visibility: {"owner_request":"Prepare a note only: after completion, when will the next instance appear?","task_state":"complete; fictional snapshot"} Report date-specified visibility; leave exact next date and timing algorithm unknown. Retained Google documented visibility wording; supplied no immediate-appearance or completion-relative calculation.
edit-next: {"owner_request":"Prepare a note only: move the next occurrence; preserve the series schedule.","requested_scope":"next-occurrence"} Tasks date control is the documented next-instance route; changed date remains to be supplied. Separated next-instance date control from repetition information; left missing replacement date unresolved.
edit-series: {"owner_request":"Prepare a note only: change the series date and time.","requested_scope":"whole-series"} Use repetition information or Calendar All tasks edit scope; target replacement values pending. Chose whole-series route without inventing replacement dates/times.
delete-future: {"owner_request":"Prepare a note only: remove this occurrence and following ones.","requested_scope":"this-and-following"} Calendar This and following tasks, no completion assertion. Kept the future-range delete scope distinct from This task and All tasks.
stop-and-resume: {"owner_request":"Prepare a note only: stop repeating now and resume this same series later.","requested_scope":"whole-series"} Do not promise restart; Google requires a new repeating series. Flagged unsupported same-series resume and kept recreation separately unauthorized.
missing-selection: {"selected_occurrence_id":null,"scheduled_day":null} Do not infer target from title, rule or missing day; handoff target unresolved. Stopped exact occurrence recommendation until selected occurrence and owner day are supplied.
timed-no-zone: {"scheduled_time":"09:00","time_zone":null,"owner_request":"Prepare a note only: calculate the exact next occurrence UTC instant."} No exact instant calculation from unconfirmed timed zone or undocumented advancement. Left zone/algorithm questions unresolved and produced no UTC/DST rows.
malformed-scope: {"requested_scope":true} Reject ambiguous scope rather than interpreting true as whole series. Flagged unsupported scope representation; no operation scope chosen.
changed-snapshot: {"selected_occurrence_id":"fictional-other-occurrence","owner_request":"Prepare a note only: skip fictional-desk-reset-2026-10-05 while keeping later occurrences."} Selected snapshot conflicts with requested occurrence; fresh matching handoff needed. Did not transfer authorization to a similarly named or changed selected occurrence.
shared-task: {"record_kind":"fictional-shared-task","assignee_role":"fictional-other-person"} This personal repeating-task procedure does not establish shared repeat/assignment authority. Applied shared-task non-repeat boundary; no conversion, reassignment or underlying-work claim.
missing-owner: {"owner_role":null,"assignee_role":null,"acceptance":null} Clarify responsible owner/role; do not infer acceptance or permission from record. Kept ownership/acceptance unresolved and no live operation authorized.

These cases exercise scope and uncertainty, not a scheduler or task parser. No live action, notification, advancement or work result was tested. A distinct internal checker reopened both Computer guides on 2026-10-05T04:10:32Z, verified the complete fixture and case records, and walked through additional scope boundaries. Author and checker share the operator; these are source/desk checks, not independent factual review or product tests.

Corrections should identify the exact revision, Computer surface, affected step and current official wording or actual result, with private account/list/task identifiers excluded. Sources checked 2026-10-05 UTC; recheck by 2026-11-05 UTC or sooner on source, UI, context or selected-record changes.
