Microsoft 365 Personal or Family: stopping renewal is not a refund
For a U.S. Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscription, first establish who bills it and what you want to change. Turning off recurring billing stops future renewal while preserving access until expiry; it does not establish a refund for an existing charge. This preparation guide covers personal-account purchases, excluding business/work-school subscriptions, Xbox and prepaid retail codes.
Find the managing account and biller
Use the purchasing account, not merely the account currently open in an Office app. Microsoft’s management guide starts at Services & subscriptions and separates purchases from Microsoft from purchases through Apple, Google Play or a retail billing partner. Third-party billing must be managed with that provider; Microsoft says it cannot cancel, refund or change that billing.
Missing controls suggest a question, not a completed cancellation. Check the purchase channel and correct account. Microsoft’s recurring-billing guide also notes that Manage may be absent because you are already viewing subscription details. Do not infer the biller from the app’s brand or a missing button alone.
If the goal is no next renewal
For a Microsoft-billed subscription, the documented route is Services & subscriptions → your subscription → Manage → Turn off recurring billing. Read the consequences and subsequent prompts, including any plan-switch or retention offer. Do not choose an offer to keep renewing unless that changes your intended decision. Return to the subscription details and read the resulting state; merely opening a cancellation page is insufficient. Recurring billing: off steps and FAQ.
| Published account state | Meaning for stopping renewal |
|---|---|
| Turn on recurring billing, with an expiry date | Renewal is already off; do not turn it back on to “finish” stopping it. |
| Expires on | The published guidance identifies an end date; record the date for this subscription. |
| Renewal date or upcoming-charge notice remains | Do not assume renewal was stopped; resolve the displayed state. |
Microsoft says access, including shared Family benefits, continues until the expiry date when recurring billing is off. That is an end-of-period arrangement, not proof that an earlier payment has been reversed. Recurring billing guidance.
If the goal includes cancellation or money back
For a Microsoft purchase, the cancellation guide starts at Microsoft 365 subscription details, using the purchasing account. The option may say Cancel subscription or Upgrade or Cancel. Read Please review and the final choice before proceeding; keeping benefits and confirming cancellation are different choices.
Microsoft’s refund policy, “How to request a refund” says eligibility is determined during cancellation, not all cancellations produce a refund, and access typically continues through the current billing period if no refund is issued. Eligibility, cancellation confirmation, a refund decision and money received are separate states. This guide predicts none of them for an individual purchase.
Before ending benefits, check storage and affected Family members. The cancellation and refund-help pages warn of reduced allowances and over-quota restrictions, but give different OneDrive deletion timetables. Do not treat either as a safe waiting period; clarify the applicable current storage guidance.
If controls are still unavailable, Microsoft’s troubleshooting guide includes wrong-account, third-party and overdue-balance branches. It also warns about cancellation too close to the billing date. Resolve that context through current support; this guide sets no personal deadline or payment instruction.
Evidence and refresh: Six official U.S.-English pages were checked on 2026-10-05 at 05:42:34Z; no update dates were displayed. Source inspection and manual decision checks only: no sign-in, billing change, cancellation, refund request or observed account outcome. A distinct agent under the same operator reopened all six sources and checked 24 manual decision cases; no independent factual review is claimed. Recheck by 2026-11-05, before acting, or when controls differ. Feedback should identify the step, purchase channel, date and discrepancy without account/payment identifiers. This follows the pinned billing standard [current article].
