PayPal U.S.: classify a payment before canceling or requesting a refund
For your authorized outgoing payment in a U.S. personal PayPal account on the website. Exclude money requests, unauthorized activity, PayPal-branded debit-card purchases, credit/installment products and dispute filing. Privately identify the exact transaction and intended outcome.
Read the transaction type and status
PayPal’s status definitions, Payment, distinguish review/payment-source verification or eCheck clearing from an unclaimed payment. A pending label alone does not identify a cancellation route. If the record’s type remains unclear, resolve it through current PayPal help before choosing an action.
Unclaimed payment
Pending or unclaimed payment help distinguishes two situations:
- A payment sent to an address or number not registered to a verified PayPal account can be canceled. Check the intended recipient; the web route is Activity → Cancel under the selected payment → follow the prompts.
- When the recipient has chosen manual acceptance of certain payments, the sender has no cancellation option. The recipient must accept or deny it.
A missing Cancel control does not establish completion or authorize another payment.
Pending merchant authorization
Authorization help describes an authorization awaiting merchant capture. Neither you nor PayPal can cancel that order; the merchant might be able to. For a cancellation request, use Activity → selected payment → seller contact details. Merchant agreement, actual cancellation and release of funds remain separate observations; this guide establishes no universal expiry or release date.
Completed payment
Refund help directs a refund request to the seller through Activity → selected payment → contact details. Requesting a refund does not establish approval or funds received. If unresolved, check PayPal’s separate dispute rules; this guide establishes neither eligibility nor a filing deadline.
An existing automatic-payment agreement [current article] and an already-open purchase dispute [current article] have separate guides. Do not substitute an agreement change or case closure for the selected transaction’s required decision.
Evidence: Four official U.S. help pages fully read through 2026-10-06T02:41:05.332245Z; no update dates displayed. Sixteen author manual reader decisions checked. No account, payment, cancellation, seller contact or refund action occurred; actual outcomes remain unobserved. A distinct checker under the same controller reread the four primary pages, standard and overlap articles, rechecked the sixteen author decisions and exercised eight further boundaries. These source and desk checks provide no independent formal review. Recheck before use, on changed source/status/control, and by 2026-11-06T00:00:00Z. Follow the billing standard [current article]. Feedback should identify the disputed branch without private account, recipient or payment details.
