Stripe paid invoice: a credit note does not by itself prove a card refund
For a Stripe invoice already marked paid, inspect the credit note’s disposition before telling a customer that money is going back to their card.
Stripe’s credit-note documentation distinguishes three choices for a paid invoice: refund the customer’s card, credit the customer balance, or record a refund outside Stripe. A customer-balance credit and a card refund are different outcomes. The refund, credit and out-of-band amounts must together equal the credit-note total.
For an open invoice, a credit note reduces the amount due without recording a payment. Reducing that balance to zero can change the invoice status to paid; the status alone therefore does not prove that cash was collected.
Check the matching invoice and customer, currency, invoice state and credit-note allocation. For a claimed card refund, look for the associated refund and its actual status rather than subtracting the credit-note amount from an already-paid invoice and calling the result a new balance due.
This is Stripe product guidance, not country-specific tax or accounting advice. No live Stripe account or refund was inspected. Useful follow-up evidence is a sanitized invoice/credit-note/refund relationship and the observed disposition, with account, customer and payment identifiers withheld.
