USPS Hold Mail: pause an address, not one parcel

Prepare a current residential address-wide USPS Hold Mail decision: all residents and mail, duration, authority, eligibility and end handling remain separate from holding one parcel or observing delivery.

USPS Hold Mail: pause an address, not one parcel

USPS Hold Mail covers all mail for all individuals at an eligible address, including letters and packages, for 3–30 days. It cannot hold only one package or selected items. This guide covers preparation for a current U.S. residential address, by the customer or an authorized agent; no request is performed here. USPS Hold Mail FAQ, introduction and who can submit.

Check the scope before choosing the service

If one resident is away while others still need deliveries, return that address-wide effect to the owner before proceeding. Discuss the intended scope with affected residents as a preparation practice; this is not a claim that USPS requires a particular household consent form. An address, account login or package tracking number alone does not establish the assistant's authority to change delivery.

For one incoming item, investigate its separate eligibility instead. USPS Delivery Instructions is for certain mailpieces and the intended recipient. Its exclusions include an active Hold Mail request at the address, items already out for delivery or delivered, and signature-required items. Do not assume the two services can be combined or that this alternative is available for a particular parcel. Delivery Instructions FAQ, definition and eligibility.

Establish the address, authority and dates privately

An eligible-address customer or authorized agent may request the service. It excludes a former address where the customer no longer lives. An existing change-of-address order needs its own check. The FAQ also requires at least three days between hold periods; consecutive requests are not a workaround for the maximum duration. Hold Mail FAQ, authority, duration and Change of Address.

Record the intended current address, affected scope, start/end dates and unresolved authority privately. A shorter or longer need does not fit this service. Do not convert an unsuitable request into forwarding, cancel an existing order or change dates without the owner's separate decision.

Online requests require a USPS.com account and identity verification. The service page allows preparation up to thirty days ahead. The FAQ says online availability varies by address and directs unavailable-address requests to the local Post Office. No account or address eligibility was checked here. For same-day timing, the service page says by 3 AM ET (2 AM CT); DMM 508.11.2.1 says before 2 AM Central Time and that a request may begin that business day. The zone labels need not conflict, but the wording does not settle a request made exactly at the cutoff. Confirm uncertain timing with USPS; this guide calculates no local deadline or guaranteed start.

Choose end handling without assuming receipt

DMM 508.11.4 offers pickup or carrier delivery on the specified ending date. Pickup requires acceptable identification; carrier delivery is limited by mailbox capacity, with a notice for overflow. Confirm the intended option and unresolved collection requirements separately. Holding accountable mail does not establish a signature waiver. For mail still awaiting pickup—chosen pickup or delivery overflow—DMM 508.11.4 requires collection within 10 days of the request’s end date, with return to sender or secure destruction afterward. No personal cutoff is calculated here. DMM 508.11.1.1 and 11.4.

Keep preparation, an accepted request, actual paused delivery and eventual receipt separate. Do not publish addresses, account details, identity evidence or confirmation numbers.

Evidence: Four official sources checked 2026-10-05T07:44:26Z. Fourteen synthetic author decisions were manually checked against the original draft; no account, address lookup, request, call, mail handling or delivery result was accessed or tested. A distinct same-operator checker freshly read the four sources at 2026-10-05T07:53:50Z and checked those fourteen decisions plus eight further boundaries. Shared control supplies no independent formal review. Recheck before use, on source or service changes, and by 2026-11-05T00:00:00Z. Feedback should identify the disputed public step without private details. This follows the parcel standard [current article].
