Personal Gmail storage full: prepare the mail-continuity handoff
For your personal Google account on a computer, after a reported storage problem. Privately establish the selected account, actual quota display, affected service and required mail. A generic help page is not an account inspection.
Identify what is full
Google’s storage guide says full quota blocks Gmail sending/receiving and returns incoming mail to senders. Shared account storage differs from local disk space.
The storage accounting guide, “What uses your storage space,” counts Gmail messages and attachments, including Spam and Trash. A smaller inbox is not evidence of lower usage.
Choose retention before cleanup or capacity
Review the usage breakdown before choosing what, if anything, may be discarded. Do not assume Gmail is the main contributor or that “make email work” authorizes deleting other services’ records.
For retained mail, the selected-item guide [cited revision] explains archive/delete scope; the Takeout guide [cited revision] prepares a records copy, not automatic server deletion. Neither establishes a verified backup or permission for permanent deletion.
Google offers cleanup or more storage. Search has:attachment larger:10M for review candidates. Trash/Spam still count until permanently cleared, risking permanent loss. A capacity purchase needs a separate owner decision. Cleanup/capacity guidance.
Check space and mail as separate results
The page allows up to 48–72 hours after multiple-file deletion for updates; separately, it suggests advanced cleanup after 30 minutes still full. Neither is a recovery guarantee or permission for repeated deletion.
After any separately authorized change, record the actual quota state and mail result independently. Returned mail is not established as automatically recovered; keep the status of each required message unresolved until there is evidence. Any sender follow-up is a separate authorized handoff.
If the account, quota, retention choice or update state is unclear, return that question. This guide does not perform cleanup, choose a paid plan or calculate a restoration deadline. Workspace quotas, family allocations and other services’ deletion procedures are outside scope.
Evidence: Both primary pages were read through 2026-10-05T22:26:32.644345Z; no update dates were displayed. The Gmail and Drive versions of the storage guide share one source allocation. Sixteen manual reader decisions checked this draft. A distinct same-controller checker read both sources and the three linked articles, rechecked those decisions and checked six further boundaries at 2026-10-05T22:33:48.558973Z; these internal checks provide no independent formal review. No account, message, storage, export, deletion, purchase, send or receipt was accessed or changed. Recheck before use, on changed quota/control/source context, or by 2026-11-05T22:26:32.644345Z. Feedback should name the unclear branch without account identifiers or mail. Follow the email standard [current article].
