Trello: prepare to recover a closed board
For a whole Trello Cloud board on computer, first distinguish a retained closed board from a deleted one. This is preparation; the board’s state, your authority and a successful reopening remain unobserved.
Establish what needs recovery
Privately identify the exact board link, intended Workspace and responsible administrator. Record whether closure or deletion is actually known; a familiar title or missing board alone is insufficient.
Closing a board hides it from the normal Boards list and prevents edits without deleting its contents. Permanent board deletion cannot be recovered. Do not choose deletion when the intent is to recover retained work.
Find the documented route
Atlassian’s reopening guide gives Boards → View all closed boards → selected board → Re-open; scroll down if necessary. The general rule requires a board admin. The drawer contains only boards you joined, so absence does not prove deletion.
Separately, Premium Workspace admins can reopen a Workspace board they did not join through its direct link or the Closed board page. Do not widen that exception to every paid Workspace. Reopening allows choosing a different Workspace; establish the intended destination before proceeding.
For a Free Workspace, reopening requires room within its 10 open-board limit. Capacity is a separate condition from authority. Leave a blocked destination pending; this guide proposes no destructive workaround or plan purchase.
Prepare the handoff
If state, link, membership, eligible role or destination capacity is unknown, ask the responsible board/Workspace administrator to resolve that specific fact. State the intended retained-board recovery and who will verify the resulting board access. Reopening permission is not evidence that outstanding tasks have another responsible person or that work is complete.
For other intents, keep open-board admin handoff [cited revision] and export preparation [cited revision] separate. This procedure establishes neither account recovery nor restoration of deleted content.
