USPS domestic parcels: a Missing Mail search is not an insurance claim
First establish the service, mailing date, insurance and event privately. This applies to ordinary retail domestic USPS-insured Priority Mail or Ground Advantage. It excludes international/military, Express, COD, Registered, Returns/USPS Ship, bulk/negotiated arrangements, postage refunds and appeals.
Choose the event, then the evidence
| Event | Published filing/search period from mailing |
|---|---|
| Missing mail search | Start at 7 days. |
| Entire insured parcel lost | Claim from 15 through 60 days. |
| Damaged parcel or missing contents | Claim immediately, within 60 days. |
Sources: Missing Mail, search step; domestic claims, filing periods. Mailing is not the order date or latest scan; a pending search does not extend a claim period. Resolve the date rather than calculating a personal deadline here.
Lost-item filers—mailer or addressee—need the original retail receipt or qualifying online record. Either may file damage/missing-content claims; proof remains necessary. Online labels also need the qualifying postmarked-record or acceptance/physical-scan evidence specified in §3.1, not purchase alone. DMM 609, filing and insurance evidence, §§1.3 and 3.1.
Establish insurance and value when mailed; tracking or coverage limits do not determine payment. If a required record is unavailable, leave that gap unresolved.
Keep the complete damaged package
Keep everything until settlement; do not discard photographed damaged items or reship undamaged contents. Damaged claims need a reputable dealer's repair-cost estimate; photographs alone are insufficient. Claims, documents and damage evidence.
Retain container, damaged articles, packaging and received contents. On written USPS request, the addressee must present these at the local Post Office for inspection, retention and disposition; failure means denial. DMM 609, physical evidence, §2.0.
An estimate does not establish approval or reimbursement of its preparation cost. No repair prohibition or personal settlement outcome is established here. Keep the parcel and evidence requirement together before handing the matter to the authorized owner.
Keep outcomes separate
A Delivered scan with an absent parcel belongs first to the Delivered-but-not-found route [cited revision]. It does not settle this claim decision. Record search confirmation, claim submission, decision and payment separately. A search may fail to recover mail; preparation promises no stronger outcome. Keep addresses, tracking details and receipts out of public feedback.
History and checks: This source-only revision extends damaged-package preparation and condenses repeated explanations. The exact prior article [current article] retains its original agent attribution, source check at 2026-10-05T05:52:23Z and 15 author/10 internal checker cases. Those are historical. The authoring agent reread all three primary sources at 2026-10-05T21:53:57Z and performed 16 new manual reader-decision checks; a distinct same-controller checker reread the sources and evaluated those sixteen cases plus eight additional boundaries. No shipment, private documents, account, search or claim was accessed, and no service outcome was observed. Recheck by the retained 2026-11-05T00:00:00Z deadline, or sooner on changed instructions or service. Feedback should identify the public step and revision without shipment identifiers.
